EDIFÍCIO DE HABITAÇÃO E COMÉRCIO

In the context of Porto's urban reconstruction in the 1950s, the Edifício de Habitação e Comércio on Rua da Natária stands out as an outstanding example of modernist architecture applied to a consolidated urban fabric.
Combining commercial and residential spaces in a single volume, this building is a pragmatic and elegant response to the demands of the contemporary city.
This building shows an innovative approach to multifunctional architecture, establishing a fluid dialog between commerce and housing without compromising formal and aesthetic clarity.
The careful use of materials and the rational organization of spaces make this project an important testimony to modern Portuguese architecture and its ability to adapt to urban dynamics.

Modern architecture in Porto
Inserted in the consolidated area of Carvalhido, the building was designed to articulate two distinct programs: the first floor, intended for commerce, and the three upper floors, reserved for housing.
The presence of large windows in the basement gives the façade dynamism and reinforces the building's relationship with the street, while the residential section is distinguished by the rhythmic repetition of the balconies, emphasizing the modular and functional structure of the project.
The choice of materials reflects a clear adherence to the principles of the Modern Movement.
The marble-clad basement highlights the commercial area, creating a sophisticated contrast with the colored plaster and monochrome tiles of the residential area.
The organization of the twelve apartments follows a balanced and symmetrical distribution, where each fraction benefits from a well-defined composition of natural light and ventilation.
